We got the chance to work with different primary schools in the Tusome project under this program.
Tusome means “Let’s Read” in Kiswahili. It was launched in 2015 by the USAID and Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST). It’s implemented in public and a number of (Alternative Provision of Basic Education and Training Institutions in Kenya (APBET) schools in the country. The main goal is to improve reading and writing skills (English and Kiswahili) of children in classes 1, 2 and 3.
YIKE under Tusome project is working closely with 20 APBET schools under Korogocho cluster, targeting children in class (grade) 1 and 2. The project has in- school activities, sensitization forums of parent/community members on the importance of supporting their children towards Early Grade Reading (EGR) at community level, production of Animation videos and development of talking walls/reading corners in the 20 APBET schools, among others.
March 2018 activities;
- Formation of reading and writing clubs to enhance the culture of reading in the 20 APBET schools, two clubs were formed per school.
- Conduct 2 reading and writing sessions per school during afternoon hours and weekends
