FIRST YEAR TRAININGS

in 2013, the training and research project organized and recruited 9 youth groups from the informal settlements of Nairobi. These groups will undergo a 2 day training in Team building, conflict resolution and communication. The trainings are set to start on 8th May 2013 and run through till 31st May. The groups that will benefit from these trainings are Kariobangi Marura Self Help Group, Pillars Youth Group, Millenium Productions, United Arts Youth Group, Korogocho Arts, Culture, Artisan and skills group, Mathare Vijana Development organization, Blessed Youth group, sky youth self help group and Sanaa Utamaduni. The groups are involved in different income generating activities ranging from garbage collection, traditional performances, water vending, acting, cyber cafe and running of a green house for vegetables growth.

2013 ACTIVITIES

Each program has set out activities that will be carried out throughout the year.

Training and Research

The project has recruited 8 new first year groups from the areas of Mathare, Lucky Summer (Baba Dogo), Huruma, Kariobangi and Korogocho. The groups are scheduled to undergo trainings and work closely with YIKE for the next three years after which they are expected to be in a partner-like relationship with YIKE. Each group consists of at least 15 members and they are involved in a common income generating activity for the group.

HIV/AIDS
In the first month of 2013, the project already has 18 community outreach events, 3 MARPS (Most At Risk Population) and 1 Sporting Activity. These events will be undertaken in the areas of Kariobangi, korogocho, Dandora and Mukuru in Nairobi.

Information Communication Technology

Throughout the year, there will be four intakes of students to study Basic computer skills after which they will graduate and proceed to Nairobits school of Design. The students merit will determine whether they proceed. The interviews for the intake will take place at YIKE's resource center. New classes will be starting quarterly. Each intake will have 30 students thus at the end of the year, 120 students will have benefited from these classes.

GEM
The Girls Empowerment through Microfranchising project (GEM) will be recruiting new girls to join the franchises already in place. These are Kenchic, Darling Industries and D-Light. The girls will be trained in business after which they will be given equipment to start off their personal businesses. there will be monitoring and evaluation which will be done by the project mentors who are all ladies. This year, the project is set to increase the age bracket of girls being recruited from the previous 17-19years to 17-21years. this move is set to reach more girls with interest in business.

WORLD AIDS DAY CELEBRATIONS

On 1st December, YIKE in collaboration with GOAL-KENYA and LiSPS (Life Skills Promoters) organized for an event at the Daniel Comboni primary school which saw over 120 youth and 200 children in attendance. Under the theme "Getting to Zero" the event started off with a procession from YIKE offices to the venue in Korogocho where there were speeches from the chief of the area who emphasized on how the number of infections in Korogocho had greatly reduced. He thanked the organizers especially YIKE for its activities against HIV/AIDS in Korogocho. There were performances of skits with HIV/AIDS messages by youth groups working with YIKE and school children performed songs/poems for edutainment. The days celebrations ended at 2.00 o'clock with refreshments for all that were present.

THE UN_WOMEN/YIKE TRAININGS START FOR WOMEN ASPIRANTS IN NAIROBI

The first aspirants training under the UN-Women funded project started 7th, Nov 2012 at two venues, the Kariobangi Catholic Church and at Dandora. Most of the women aspirants showed up for the events and were trained on the elective positions available to them, the qualifications required for each post and their duties/responsibilities for each post they will be vying for.

LAUNCH OF THE BIO-CENTER AT HIGH-RIDGE, KOROGOCHO

The construction of the bio-center was started last year and on 19th November 2012, there will be a ceremony to officially open the center. The project is Funded by Oxfam and Umande Trust and implemented by YIKE to be managed by High-ridge development Youth Group in Korogocho. The center will provide washrooms for the people in the area, hall for hire services and provide clean water to the area. The guest of honor at the event will be the Nairobi District health Officer.

LAUNCH FOR THE UN-WOMEN TRAINING MANUAL
On 30th October, the Gender and Governance programme launched the women candidates training manual and the data base website. The address is http://www.womenaspirants.org at the Nairobi Safari club (Lillian Towers). The manuals will be used in training the women aspirants in the project that YIKE is a partner in implementing.

PHILADELPHIA REFUGEE YOUTH GROUP TO BE TRAINED

This week, the trainings will go to Philadelphia Refugee Youth Group. The group is made up of youth from the Southern Kivu, DRC and are based in the Mwiki area of Kasarani. This is a first year group thus they will be trained in team building, team cohesion and peace building. The sessions will start on Thursday, 1st November and continue till Saturday, 3rd November. The activities of the group include sports (football), music and dance and HIV/AIDS counseling with home based care for the infected.

WINDING UP OF SECOND YEAR TRAININGS BY THE TRAINING AND RESEARCH TEAM

The training and research team has been left with only two second year groups to train in Financial management and business/entrepreneurship. This week, the team will be heading to Family Community based youth Group in Jericho from 17th-19th October. The last group to be trained will be Vision Youth Group in Huruma from 25th-27th October.

CAPACITY BRIDGE TRAINING

From Wednesday, 17th October, under the KCDF (Kenya Community Development Foundation) project, the Youth Desk project will be conducting trainings with the Dandora Uprising Youth Group for a capacity bridge training for three days. This will be held at the groups premises and will target the gaps that the group has and try to bridge them through training. From 18th, similar trainings will be done for the MANYGRO (Mathare Number 10 Youth Group) to tackle their gaps. Most of the groups have gaps with financial records and lack of planning of activities.

TRAINING FOR PLASTIC WASTE RECYCLING PROJECT

From Wednesday, 17th to 19th October, the Plastic Waste Recycling project will be conducting trainings for the groups that are involved in  the project. This training will be focusing n sorting and shredding of the plastic wastes, financial management and OSHA (Operational. Safety, health and Audit) after which the project will be awarded a certificate for the training. The training will target four group members from each of the 11 youths groups involved in the project and this will be held at the Go-Down in Kariobangi North, Landmark building. the trainings will be held from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm for the three days.

NEW SALON FOR THE GEM PROJECT

On Monday. 15th October, a second salon, managed and run by girls under the GEM project was opened in Lucky summer area. This is the second salon to be opened. A third salon is expected to be in operation by the end of the month as at the moment the girls are busy looking for the premise/location that will be favorable to their business.

COURSE 1, 4Th INTAKE START THEIR ICT CLASS

On Monday, 15th October, the final batch of 2012 students of ICT started their classes at YIKE offices. This follows their interviews which were held on 27th September 2012 and an orientation at YIKE offices on Friday, 12th October. In total there are 30 students who will be trained for three months in basic ICT skills after which they will receive their certificates and those who excel will move to Nairobits School of design for advanced training in Graphic Designs. The ratio of the boys to girls is 1:1 in this class.

MORE SECOND YEAR GROUPS ARE TRAINED
In the first week of October, the training and research team went to Mukuru Kayaba Youth Group for the 2nd year training. The group has a resource center (library) for students from the informal settlements to use. The group also owns a sanitary block that serves the whole area. During the three day training, the group members present were trained in financial management, business and entrepreneurship among other things.

This week the team goes to Unicorns Youth Group in Huruma. They are involved in garbage collection and water vending.

 

GRADUATION OF COURSE 1, 3rd INTAKE

After three months of basic training in ICT Skills, the students in course 1, 3rd intake will be graduating at the Nairobits School of Design in Industrial Area. A total of 30 students from YIKE will be graduating. The students have been undergoing their training at YIKE's Resource Centre and all of them are from the informal settlements of Nairobi. A new batch of students (Course 1, 4th intake) will start after interviews for more students. All are welcome for the graduation ceremony.

MACHINE OPERATION TRAINING

On 18th September, the groups involved in the plastic waste recycling project underwent a machine and safety training at the Go-Down (Landmark Building, Kariobangi North). The participants were trained on efficient handling of the crushing machines, the size and type of plastic/polythene to be put in the machines, sorting of the plastics among other items. This was the final training before the project officially kicks off and the machines become operational.

SECOND YEAR TRAININGS KICKS-OFF

After training 9 first year groups, the training and research team started its training for second year groups. So far, we have already visited 9 youth groups and set dates for trainig them. From 5th-7th Sept, we trained the first group, based in Korogocho and involved in sandal making. Bidii Yetu Youth Group was trained in Financial Management and Business Planning. Luckily for the group, it is during this same time that they participates in the CCN COMMUNITY BUSINESS FAIR AND STREET FESTIVAL.

This week, (10th Sept) Humble Youth Group from Kariobangi North will be trained. They have tents and chairs for hire as their main IGA among others.

CCN COMMUNITY BUSINESS TRADE FAIR AND STREET FESTIVAL

From 6th to 8th September, youth YIKE youth groups attended and participated in the exhibition organized by the City Council of Nairobi at Nairobis CBD. The groups are victorious youth group who exhibited their curio products, Bidii Yetu Youth Group with sandals, Madoya Tumaini Youth Groups with bamboo products and ladies under the GEM products selling food products like smokies. By Saturday most of the products had been sold out and the groups were struggling to produce more. This was a nice opportunity for the groups to market their products.
